Boundary Setting Is the New Promotion

What if the bravest thing you did this week was say no?

Before I had children, I said yes to everything. I was the go-to. The 11pm Slack replier. The workhorse. After I came back? I couldn’t physically or emotionally do that anymore. But here’s what no one told me: The moment I started honoring my capacity, my work actually got better.

Are Boundaries the Key to your Next Breakthrough?

A 2023 report from McKinsey found that women who clearly communicate their work boundaries and flexibility needs are rated more effective by their peers and teams.

And those same women are significantly more likely to stay in their roles long-term. Meanwhile, moms who try to "power through" without adjusting expectations? They’re twice as likely to experience burnout, job dissatisfaction, or leave the workforce altogether within 12 months of returning from leave. Boundaries aren’t weakness. Boundaries are retention. They’re leadership.

Here are 3 boundaries I set that changed everything:

I started naming my work windows.

Instead of hoping people would "respect my time," I clearly communicated when I was online and available—and just as clearly when I wasn’t.

I turned off Slack notifications outside my work hours

It felt risky at first—like I’d miss something urgent or seem less committed. But what I gained? Mental space, fewer after-hours spirals, and the ability to show up fully when I’m actually on the clock.

I stopped apologizing for needing time.

No more “sorry I’m just now getting back to you.” I replaced it with “Thanks for your patience—here’s where we’re at.”
No explanation. No guilt. Just confidence.
